To promote the development of reusable space launch systems in India, the Technology Development Board has signed a financial assistance agreement worth Rs 200 crore with Chennai-based space technology company Agnikul Cosmos. The assistance will be provided under the Research, Development and Innovation Fund.
The main objective of the project is to develop the reusable Agnibaan launch vehicle. Under this, the aim is to take the technology beyond its current level to a higher technology readiness level. The financial assistance will be made available through optionally convertible debentures.
The proposed structure of Agnibaan is being developed in such a way that the launch vehicle can be used repeatedly. This is expected to help increase launch frequency, reduce manufacturing and launch costs, and limit space debris. The project will also work on the development of technologies related to propulsion, flight, orbital placement, descent and safe return.
Agnikul Cosmos has already worked on technologies such as the Agnibaan launch vehicle and the single-piece three-dimensional printed Agnilet rocket engine. The Technology Development Board has also previously supported the company in the development and commercialisation of a launch vehicle customised for small satellites.
According to Technology Development Board Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak, the next phase of India’s space programme will require technologies that can provide access to space with greater frequency, flexibility and efficiency. The Agnibaan programme aims to strengthen the country’s capability in advanced and reusable space transportation systems.
