CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, a one-day teacher training programme was organised by the Regional Science Centre, Bhopal, a unit of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The objective of the programme was to introduce teachers to activity-based and experimental methods of science teaching and to train them to communicate complex scientific concepts to students in a simple, interesting and effective manner.
The training programme was organised keeping in mind the objectives of experiential and activity-based education outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and in line with Madhya Pradesh’s SpaceTech Policy and Science and Technology Policy, with the aim of promoting science, technology, innovation and scientific temper.
During the training, participants were given the opportunity to understand scientific concepts through hands-on experiments and activities related to physics, chemistry and biology.
Under physics, concepts such as heat transfer and convection, sound and vibration, laws of motion, centre of mass, and expansion and contraction of substances due to changes in temperature were explained through experiments. In chemistry, basic concepts such as endothermic and exothermic reactions, chains of chemical reactions, oxidation and reduction were demonstrated through simple experiments. In biology, concepts related to microscopic observation, the structure of plant cells, and the exchange of gases in leaves were explained practically.
Special emphasis was placed on learning by doing and experience-based learning. Teachers took part in the experiments themselves and learned how effective science activities can be conducted in schools using limited resources and everyday objects.
During the training programme, the participating teachers also undertook a specially guided tour of the Hall of Space Exploration at the Regional Science Centre. The teachers viewed displays and models related to space science, the Indian space programme, space exploration and related scientific achievements. They also took a guided tour of the centre’s other science galleries and exhibits, and experienced science through interactive and experiential methods.
The purpose of the programme was not only to provide information on scientific facts, but also to promote among teachers the scientific habit of asking questions, observing, experimenting, reasoning and drawing conclusions, so that they can play a more effective role in developing scientific temper, curiosity and a spirit of innovation among students.
The Regional Science Centre, Bhopal, is continuing efforts to connect teachers and students with science and technology through such training programmes, in line with the experiential learning approach of NEP 2020 and the policy priorities aimed at promoting science, technology and the space sector in Madhya Pradesh.
