CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Team India’s special plan for 12 matches, focus on bowlers

To keep Indian bowlers fresh during the long and busy tour against New Zealand, the team management has prepared a workload management plan. According to India bowling coach Morne Morkel, the tour will include five T20 internationals, five ODIs and two Test matches. In such a situation, the emphasis will be on resting bowlers as required, using rotation and keeping backup options ready. Morkel described this strategy as a “bulletproof plan”.

Bowlers to be prepared through rotation across 12 matches

The team management has planned the players’ workload after taking the tour schedule into account in advance. During the ODI series, bowlers will be rotated so that they can get the required match practice and recovery opportunities before the Test matches. However, Morkel also acknowledged that every plan does not necessarily work out exactly as intended.

Arshdeep Singh under watch as Test team backup

Left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh is also among the possible backup options for Test cricket. Morkel said the bowling unit would be finalised after assessing the conditions and team combination. Arshdeep has not yet made his Test debut for India, but his experience in domestic red-ball cricket could be useful for the team.

Focus on preparation of all bowlers, including Bumrah

Morkel made it clear that the rotation and backup plan includes all bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah. Before the Test series, some players will also play for India A so that they get a chance to prepare for red-ball cricket. The team’s objective is to ensure that, despite the busy schedule, the bowlers remain fit and ready for key matches.
