CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Indore: Technology is increasingly changing the way urban sanitation services are delivered in India, with digital dashboards, artificial intelligence-powered robots and electric vehicles being used to improve efficiency, transparency and worker safety. The shift is gaining momentum as cities adopt technology-enabled approaches under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
In Raipur, a digital Faecal Sludge Management dashboard allows residents to book septic-tank desludging services, make payments and track requests online. The system also enables drivers to upload photographs after completing work, helping municipal authorities verify services and monitor vehicles digitally.
Thiruvananthapuram has introduced G-SPIDER, an AI-powered canal-cleaning system developed by Genrobotic Innovations. The robot is designed to work in confined spaces such as the covered stretch of the Amayizhanchan Canal, using machine vision, sensors and a specialised mechanism to remove waste while reducing workers’ exposure to hazardous conditions.
Electric mobility is also becoming part of waste collection. Guntur uses more than 200 electric autos equipped with GPS tracking, while Chennai has deployed 5,478 battery-operated e-rickshaws across its 15 zones for door-to-door collection. The Chennai fleet uses separate bins for wet, dry and hazardous waste and covers more than 2.1 million households.
Indore has deployed 100 electric waste-collection vehicles with GPS monitoring through its Integrated Command and Control Centre. The city has also established 20 solar charging stations, linking electric waste collection with renewable-energy infrastructure.
These initiatives demonstrate how technology is being integrated into different stages of urban sanitation, from online service booking and real-time monitoring to mechanised cleaning and electric waste collection. The approach is aimed at creating more responsive sanitation services while reducing environmental impact and improving safety for sanitation workers.
