Revanth Reddy accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of politically associating itself with Lord Ram, saying sentiments linked to Ram have played a role in the BJP’s success in North India. Speaking at an event in Delhi, he said the BJP had “stolen Ram” and that Ram is a matter of emotion and faith for people.
Referring to religious and cultural perceptions in North and South India, Revanth Reddy also commented on Lord Shiva and Lord Ram. He said Shiva is considered the god of the poor and Ram the god of the rich, and described the BJP as a party of the rich. He also questioned why “Har Har Mahadev” is not raised along with “Jai Shri Ram” on BJP platforms.
The Chief Minister’s remarks drew a sharp response from the BJP. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar alleged that Revanth Reddy was trying to create a political divide between Lord Ram and Lord Shiva. Referring to religious sites such as Vemulawada and Bhadrachalam in Telangana, he said faith in both deities exists in different parts of the country. At the same event, Revanth Reddy also appealed to opposition parties to unite over the special intensive revision of the electoral rolls and spoke of launching a movement against it. His statement has also intensified political debate.
