CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Woman Says Ten Bites Are Enough After Bariatric Surgery Ordeal

New Delhi. For people struggling with obesity, losing weight may be not only a physical change but also a major health challenge. Amid this, a woman named Apoorva Prakash Mukherjee has shared her experience after bariatric surgery. She said that after the surgery she faced difficulties with eating and drinking, diarrhoea, constipation and swelling in the body. According to her, it is no longer possible to eat much at one time, and she feels full after about 10 bites.

According to Apoorva, her weight had risen to about 105 kg after marriage. In health tests conducted in January 2025, she was found to have diabetes, increased cholesterol and fatty liver. Later, she also developed sleep apnoea, a condition that can cause problems related to breathing during sleep and oxygen levels in the body. She tried to lose weight through regular walking and diet control, but according to her, the weight would return. She then consulted a doctor and decided to undergo bariatric surgery. She said the procedure has so far cost about Rs 4 lakh.

Apoorva underwent sleeve gastrectomy on July 17, 2026. This is a bariatric surgery procedure in which a large part of the stomach is removed to make it smaller. The aim is to restrict food intake and help reduce weight. According to the woman, she began suffering from diarrhoea from the third day after surgery and later continued to face constipation. She said she had difficulty taking a liquid diet for the first month. Even after starting solid food, she experienced swelling and water retention in the body. She then changed her doctor and dietician, and her condition has now improved somewhat.

Apoorva said her appetite has reduced considerably after the surgery. She can now eat only a very small amount at one time, and the taste of some foods she earlier liked also feels different to her. She advised others to obtain full information about the possible benefits, risks, costs and aftercare before deciding on any major medical procedure.

Is surgery necessary for everyone? According to experts, bariatric surgery can be a useful treatment for some people who have serious health problems along with obesity and for whom other measures have not proved sufficient. However, its suitability depends on a person’s weight, body mass index (BMI), health condition and other medical factors. Regular medical monitoring, a balanced diet and the intake of essential nutrients are also important after surgery. Apoorva’s story is her personal experience. It cannot be concluded from this that all patients will face similar problems or that surgery is unsuitable for everyone. Before taking any decision on obesity treatment, it is important to consult a qualified doctor and understand all available options.
