CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Losing some hair every day is normal, but persistent thinning, a receding hairline or patchy hair loss can be a sign of an underlying problem. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hair loss can have many causes.
Ten major causes of hair loss:
Genetic or pattern hair loss
Constant stress
Excessive hair shedding after a serious illness, high fever or surgery
Deficiency of iron, protein, zinc or other nutrients
Thyroid or other hormonal problems
Very tight hairstyles
Frequent hair colouring, perming or chemical treatments
Excessive use of heat, including straighteners and curling irons
Scalp disease or alopecia areata
The effect of certain medicines or medical treatments.
Prevention and care: Avoid rubbing the hair harshly, use a mild shampoo and conditioner, do not tie hair too tightly, and limit heat and chemical treatments. Eat a balanced diet and do not take hair supplements without testing, because excessive amounts of some nutrients can also cause harm. If hair is falling rapidly or sudden patches are appearing, it is better to consult a dermatologist. Treatment can be more effective once the correct cause is identified.
