CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In the capital, incidents of attackers targeting innocent and harmless people are on the rise. Due to the state’s weak law and order, goons, rowdies, and masked criminals have created an atmosphere of fear and violence, making ordinary citizens unsafe.
Puneet Tandon, the State President of the Congress Right to Information (RTI) Cell, reported that the other day, masked criminals attacked an RTI activist walking on the road under the Ashoka Garden police station area, severely injuring him. The criminals broke his legs with a baseball bat and threatened him with a sword. The RTI activist was working to expose illegal hoardings at religious sites and issues related to labor boards.
Mr. Tandon cited the Right to Information Act of 2005, stating that the central government has enacted a law for obtaining information in the public interest from government offices, granting every citizen the right to access information under this act. He said that the deadly attack on the RTI activist in Bhopal raises questions about the state government’s functioning. This criminal act by the goons is highly condemnable. Many cases are emerging where RTI activists, who help expose corruption and other anti-public activities, are being targeted in deadly attacks.
Mr. Tandon has written a letter to the Police Commissioner, demanding that in order to prevent such incidents from recurring, the government should provide security arrangements for RTI activists and workers, and that strict legal action should be taken against those responsible for the attacks on RTI activists.
When presenting the memorandum to the Police Commissioner, Mr. Tandon was accompanied by social activists D.P. Singh, Brikesh Singh, Digambar Jhumpa, Sanjay Mishra, Iqbal Khan, and other activists.
