Newsrooms cannot release any news without verification and background checks. Creating and spreading deepfakes through AI has begun happening on a very large scale. At times, even confirmed sources may provide unverified or misleading information. In such a situation, decisions on preparing and releasing news properly can be taken only with technology as well as editorial judgment.
Senior journalist Pratyush Ranjan, the subject expert present today at the AI-based FDP under way at MCU, said this. He said that in this era of technology, any type of content should be disseminated through the media only after it has been thoroughly verified. Explaining seven different kinds of checks in deepfake investigation in detail, he underlined the importance of processes such as checking audio acoustics, visual metadata, context, network and ground reality.
Ranjan said AI does not create misinformation on its own; rather, users create wrong information by using it. He said AI can today create deepfakes with great sophistication. Identifying them in comparison with genuine content has become even more difficult. In such a situation, there are several tools with the help of which this kind of wrong information can be identified. Shri Pratyush Ranjan also gave training on several important tools, including Google Pinpoint and Google SynthID. The use of AI tools in academic and research sectors in educational institutions can yield very good results.
In a technical session held today, Professor C.P. Agrawal, head of the Department of Media Research, also shared his views on AI tools and explained their usefulness. Teachers from all departments of the university were present on the occasion. In the sessions to be held in the coming days of this FDP, noted experts from across the country will train participants on several important topics, including AI and generative content, multi-form data with Pinpoint, deepfakes, synthetic media forensics, AI newsroom architecture and AI ethics.
