CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Ahead of Diwali, the Supreme Court on Wednesday made an important observation on the use of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR. The court indicated that instead of imposing a complete ban on firecrackers, a fixed time window could be set for their use. The court said that while taking a decision, it was necessary to keep in mind people’s religious and social sentiments as well as environmental and health concerns.

A bench of Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice P.B. Varale said neither could bursting firecrackers throughout the day be permitted, nor would a complete ban be imposed. The court is considering a solution under which only permitted firecrackers may be used during a specified time period. The Supreme Court has given the Centre and the relevant expert institutions time until 15 October to examine the environmental impact linked to the use of barium in firecrackers. Further arrangements will be considered after the report is submitted.

During the hearing, suggestions related to the manufacture and use of new-generation green joint firecrackers meeting prescribed standards were also discussed. However, allowing them would not mean permission for fireworks throughout the day or without any limit. The final arrangement on the use of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR will be decided during the hearing of the related matters.
