CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: Traders’ organisations have expressed concern over the proposed Congress mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan. Business owners say the large political event could affect customer movement, goods transport and routine commercial activity in the capital’s major markets. Traders have demanded that the rally be reconsidered and held after Diwali.

Business owners associated with the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) have expressed apprehension that traffic restrictions and crowds on roads during the rally could make it difficult to reach markets. They said this could affect shop sales and business transactions. The organisation has written to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, informing him of traders’ concerns and urging a change in the rally date.

Traders’ organisations have claimed that business worth up to about Rs 10 thousand crore could be affected because of the mega rally. However, this figure is an apprehension expressed by traders, not a certified assessment of actual losses. Any estimate of possible loss will depend on traffic arrangements during the rally, the situation in markets and customer movement.

Business owners say the period around Diwali is important for Delhi’s markets. In such a situation, disruption in commercial areas because of a large event could cause difficulties for shopkeepers and small business owners.

Attention will now be on Congress’s response to this demand and the steps the administration takes regarding traffic arrangements.
