CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the occasion of World Environment Day, a special program was organized by the C. V. Raman Science Communication Center, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit, and the Departments of Science and Law of Rabindranath Tagore University at Jhiri village (the origin point of the Betwa River) and within the university campus. The aim of the program was to raise public awareness about environmental conservation and to encourage youth to actively participate in this cause.
Renowned environmentalist Sharad Kumre, speaking on the occasion, stated, “Neglecting the environment in the race for development is leading us toward destruction. Deforestation, drying rivers, loss of biodiversity, and climate change—all these issues are man-made. In such times, the role of youth is extremely important.” He appreciated the efforts of the NSS volunteers and honored them with ‘Cleanliness Medals’ and mementos.
As part of the program, students and teachers planted around 45–50 saplings of mango, banyan, and guava trees, and also conducted a cleanliness drive in the village and along the river area. Additionally, villagers were made aware of issues such as living plastic-free, conserving water and electricity, substance abuse prevention, and cleanliness.
The program was led by NSS Program Officer Gabbar Singh, Preeti Singh (Head of the Science Communication Center), and Bhupendra Singh. The event was also attended by Kamal Gurjar, the Sarpanch of Jhiri village, representatives of the Gandhi Gram Seva Samiti, officials from the Ken-Betwa Link Project, as well as a large number of villagers, youth, and students.
