CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the eve of ‘Birsa Munda Jayanti,’ a lecture on the contributions of the tribal community was organized at NITTTR Bhopal, delivered by Vijay Manohar Tiwari, former Information Commissioner of Madhya Pradesh.

In his address, Tiwari highlighted the life and achievements of Birsa Munda, describing him as a great tribal leader and social reformer. Despite his short lifespan of 25 years, Birsa Munda made significant contributions to his community. His efforts included fighting for tribal rights, opposing religious conversion, promoting education and literacy, protecting women’s rights, opposing child marriage, participating in the Indian freedom movement, and preserving the cultural and religious traditions of his community while resisting forced conversions by Christian missionaries.

Born in 1872 in Ranchi district, Jharkhand, and passing away in 1901, Birsa Munda remains an enduring source of inspiration for the tribal community. Tiwari emphasized how his contributions should be better recognized and noted that many unsung heroes of the freedom movement, including Birsa Munda, are often overlooked in history. He also shed light on the influence of self-study groups inspired by Birsa Munda and their ability to mobilize millions with a single call to action.

Director C.C. Tripathi remarked on the extraordinary personality of Birsa Munda, noting that at an age when most young people are still figuring out life, he united and organized communities to lead movements. He stressed the importance of spreading knowledge about Birsa Munda’s inspirational life and contributions, particularly among today’s youth, who often remain unaware of such unsung heroes of the freedom struggle. Tripathi called for a greater appreciation of India’s rich and proud history.

In closing, P.K. Purohit emphasized the importance of staying connected to one’s roots, warning that a society disconnected from its heritage risks losing its identity. The institute’s director announced plans to produce a documentary film on the life of the great leader Birsa Munda, which will be showcased in institutions across the country.

The program, coordinated by Ravi Gupta and hosted by Rachna Gupta, concluded with a special ceremony honoring tribal officials and employees working at the institute.
