US President Donald Trump and executives of leading artificial intelligence companies have signed a voluntary agreement on AI safety. After a meeting at the White House, Trump said the companies had agreed to strengthen safety standards and oversight mechanisms for AI systems.
Under the agreement, the companies will develop stronger internal controls in their AI tools and work with independent external auditors. The auditors will be tasked with assessing whether AI systems are functioning in line with the intentions set by their creators. The companies also committed to ensuring that their AI tools do not unintentionally gain unauthorised access to technical systems. Representatives from several major technology companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Google, Nvidia and xAI, attended the meeting. Trump also indicated the possibility of forming a board of around 10 members to oversee AI safety. The agreement is not legally binding, although the possibility remains open that some of its provisions may be made part of laws or regulations in the future.
At the same meeting, Trump also reiterated support for the rapid expansion of data centres in the United States. He said AI companies would work to deliver local benefits to communities where data centres are built and contribute to infrastructure. However, opposition has also emerged in the US over the rising electricity demand and local impacts linked to data centres.
