In a social media post, Trump objected to the organisations’ reporting and said they were being barred from covering the White House. He indicated that similar action could be taken against other media organisations in the future.
Trump did not cite any single news report or incident as the reason for the decision. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, he said the move was based on the collective experience of news coverage and reporting over the past few years. However, after the announcement, journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were seen working on the White House premises until Friday evening, and it was not clear how the ban would be implemented in practice.
Responding to Trump’s move, CNN said it stood by its White House team and its fair and accurate reporting. Politico also said it would continue reporting on the White House and future administrations and would defend its constitutional rights. The decision has raised legal questions over the First Amendment of the US Constitution and press freedom. According to Reuters, experts believe the move could be challenged in court. Earlier too, disputes had arisen between the Trump administration and several media organisations over White House access and reporting.
