US President Donald Trump has acknowledged the role of the Iran war behind the Republican Party’s heavy defeat in the 2026 midterm elections. However, defending his decision to take military action, he said that if he had the opportunity again, he would attack again. In this election, the Democratic Party has secured a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This could increase political challenges for the Trump administration over the next two years.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said the Iran war affected the election results. According to him, a rise in petrol prices because of the war was also one reason for voters’ anger. Despite this, he said military action was necessary to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and that he would not change his decision. Vice President JD Vance also cited the Iran war as a key reason for the Republican Party’s defeat. He wrote on social media that the real reason for the party’s defeat was the war. His statement also exposed differences within the Republican camp over the election results.
After the election results, Democrats’ control of both houses of Congress could expand the scope of oversight and investigations into Trump’s policies. Democratic leaders have said their priority will be to reduce the cost of inflation, fuel and healthcare services.
