CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid the Russia-Ukraine war, US President Donald Trump has made a major claim. According to Trump, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to stop attacks on each other’s energy sites. In a social media post, he said Ukraine would not target Russian energy sites and Russia would do the same. However, there was no immediate formal confirmation of the agreement from either country.
Trump’s statement comes at a time when Ukraine has stepped up drone attacks on Russia’s oil refineries and energy infrastructure. Trump had earlier appealed to Ukraine not to target Russian diesel and oil installations. He claims the Russia-Ukraine war is a major reason for the rise in global diesel prices.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has responded cautiously to Trump’s claim. He said that if allied countries can ensure Russia stops attacks on Ukraine’s power plants, energy installations and critical infrastructure, Kyiv is also ready to halt retaliatory attacks.
For now, it is not clear when a possible halt to attacks on energy sites would come into effect or how it would be monitored. Therefore, it cannot be considered a broader ceasefire.
