Washington: US President Donald Trump hosted a state dinner in honour of Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan in the East Room of the White House on September 24. First Lady Melania Trump led the preparations for the dinner. Official delegations from both countries, along with business and government officials, attended the event.
The dinner menu reflected Chinese flavours with American ingredients. It began with yellow squash soup, wild mushrooms, fresh herbs, crispy pancetta and green onion oil. The main course featured sesame-crusted sea bass served with baby bok choy, roasted eggplant and herb sauce. Dessert included vanilla crémeux, a preparation made with sour cherry sweetness, walnut frangipane and ice cream made with White House honey. The dinner opened with a toast featuring the American sparkling wine “Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs,” linked to the historic 1972 meeting between Richard Nixon and Zhou Enlai.
Red was prominent in the White House décor, a colour long regarded as important in Chinese culture. Military bands performed at the event, along with classical singer Christopher Macchio. Xi Jinping’s visit was part of a three-day state visit to the United States. Trump and Xi discussed several important issues, including trade, Taiwan and artificial intelligence.
