CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal:
In the 2026 midterm elections in the United States, President Donald Trump’s Republican Party has suffered a major political setback. According to early election results and media projections, the Democratic Party has secured a majority in the Senate and is also gaining in the House of Representatives, moving toward control there. The results are being seen as the public’s response to the first two years of Trump’s second term.
In the election, the Republican Party lost important seats in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina and other states. In Texas, Democratic candidate James Talarico registered a major victory by defeating Trump-backed Republican candidate Ken Paxton. Meanwhile, victories by Roy Cooper in North Carolina and Sherrod Brown in Ohio strengthened the Democrats’ position. In several other states too, Democratic candidates captured Republican seats.
Trump says he accepts results, will work with opposition
Amid the election results, President Trump has said he will accept the midterm election outcome and is ready to work with Democrats. He indicated that agreement between the two parties could be reached on several issues. However, earlier he had also made it clear that he would use the veto, if needed, on bills coming from a Democratic-controlled Congress.
Impact likely on politics over next two years
With Democrats gaining a majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives, it could become challenging for the Trump administration to take legislative decisions. The opposition will get greater power to investigate government policies, hold hearings and monitor administrative decisions. In addition, the process of approving appointments made by the president to key posts could also be affected. According to analysts, the election results could change the balance of power in American politics and increase the likelihood of confrontation between the White House and Congress during the remainder of Trump’s term.
