Tensions between the United States and Iran appear to be rising again amid the continuing conflict between the two countries. Iran had placed before the United States a proposal for a seven-day ceasefire. Under the proposal, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened and talks on the nuclear programme would resume.
According to the report, US President Donald Trump has not accepted Iran’s proposal. The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, reported that Trump has discussed with his aides the possibility of resuming bombing of Iran after the midterm elections in November. The report has emerged at a time when efforts for diplomatic talks between the two countries are also continuing.
Earlier, at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump had referred to the possibility of an agreement with Iran and said that if no agreement was reached, the option of tough military action would remain before him. He had also urged Iran to fully open the Strait of Hormuz and return to the negotiating table.
The seven-day plan presented by Iran proposed opening the Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire and restarting talks for a broader peace agreement. Iranian officials have also indicated readiness for talks on inspections of nuclear facilities.
For now, it is not clear what direction future talks between the United States and Iran will take. Amid regional tensions, there are concerns that any new military operation could also affect the Gulf region, energy supplies and international maritime trade.
