Washington: US President Donald Trump has defended his decision to allow diesel supplies from Russia, saying the move is in the interest of the American people. He also targeted the European Union and claimed that Europe had spent $250 billion on buying energy from Russia. Trump alleged that the US media was not giving enough importance to the issue of the European Union’s energy purchases from Russia.

His remarks came amid opposition in the United States over diesel imports from Russia. On the diesel supply arrangement with Russia, Trump had announced on October 9, 2026, after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, that supplies of Russian diesel would be increased. According to him, Russia will immediately provide more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel for the US and global markets. This would be followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and, later, a planned supply of 1 million tonnes of diesel. The US administration has also granted temporary sanctions relief for the purchase of Russian diesel under this arrangement.

Trump says the decision could help control rising fuel prices and provide relief to American consumers. Fuel prices have become an important political issue ahead of the midterm elections to be held in the United States in November.

Trump’s allegation against the European Union

In a statement on social media on October 12, Trump claimed that the European Union had spent $250 billion on buying energy from Russia. He accused the US media of ignoring the issue. However, Trump did not specify any clear time period for the calculation of this amount. According to available estimates, the total spending on European Union imports of fossil fuels from Russia since the start of the Ukraine war could be around this figure.

Opposition to the decision in the United States

Differences have emerged in US politics over the decision to buy diesel from Russia. Some lawmakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties have objected to the move. Critics argue that purchasing Russian energy could provide Moscow with economic benefits, raising concerns that pressure on Russia may ease amid its continuing war against Ukraine.

A group of US lawmakers has urged the administration to withdraw the decision. They say that allowing diesel purchases from Russia while pursuing a policy of imposing economic sanctions on Russia could run counter to US strategy. On the other hand, the Trump administration is presenting the move as an effort to control fuel prices and protect domestic interests.

How much impact will it have on fuel prices?

According to experts, additional diesel supplies from Russia may provide some relief to the market, but the volume is limited in comparison with US demand. Therefore, there is no guarantee of a sharp fall in fuel prices. The ongoing conflict in West Asia and disruptions in global supply are also affecting the oil market.

For now, Trump’s decision has triggered a fresh debate over energy policy, relations with Russia and the United States’ strategy on the Ukraine war. It will become clear in the coming period how much impact the additional supply of Russian diesel has on prices and what effect it has on US politics.
