CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Washington. US President Donald Trump has once again set a condition for accepting the results of the upcoming midterm elections. Speaking to reporters on October 27, he said he would respect the election results, provided the elections are conducted honestly. His statement came at a time when the contest for control of both chambers of the US Congress in the November 3 elections has intensified.

Campaigning in Texas for a Republican candidate

Trump made the remarks before leaving for election campaigning in Texas. He was going to campaign in support of Republican candidate Ken Paxton, who is facing Democratic candidate James Talarico. Trump also said that if Democrats gain control in Congress, he could use the president’s veto power.

Why the midterm elections are important

Voting is to be held on November 3 for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats. At present, the Republican Party controls both chambers. If Democrats secure a majority in the House of Representatives or the Senate, it could become difficult to advance the Trump administration’s legislative agenda. The opposition could also get an opportunity to begin congressional scrutiny of the administration’s functioning.

Debate over election fairness returns

Trump’s statement has again brought the political debate over election fairness and acceptance of results into focus. According to a report by The Washington Post, Trump had placed conditions on accepting results in previous elections as well. However, it is important to distinguish between claims of election fraud and actual irregularities; solid evidence is necessary for any claim to be considered proven.
