CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday shared a map showing the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait.” The development came as tensions continued between the United States and Iran, and Iran proposed a seven-day plan to restore normal maritime traffic in the strait.
According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, normal maritime traffic in Hormuz could be restored within seven days if the United States removes its naval blockade, eases restrictions on Iranian oil sales and accepts a ceasefire. However, the U.S. side has expressed skepticism about the proposal.
Trump has previously claimed U.S. control over the Strait of Hormuz. The White House had also claimed control over the strait in August on the basis of U.S. naval activities.
However, the name “Trump Strait” has not been officially implemented internationally. The U.S. government can begin the process of changing geographic names for its federal use, but that does not make it mandatory for Iran, Oman, international organizations or other countries to adopt the new name. The Strait of Hormuz is located between Iran and Oman, and its maritime arrangements fall under an international framework.
