Washington. Two Indian nationals in the United States have been accused of involvement in an international network linked to the alleged trafficking and sale of counterfeit Ozempic. According to the US Department of Justice, a federal grand jury in Florida has brought conspiracy and trafficking-related charges against 33-year-old Swapnadeep Roy and 37-year-old Vicky Ramancha.
In the case, Swapnadeep Roy has been extradited from Italy to the United States and has pleaded not guilty in court. Vicky Ramancha, meanwhile, is said to be absconding. The US Food and Drug Administration said that after some counterfeit Ozempic was seized in December 2023, a public warning was also issued for consumers and healthcare professionals.
Both men face charges in the United States related to trafficking, selling counterfeit drugs and holding them for sale, as well as conspiracy to defraud the United States. If convicted, each accused could face a maximum sentence of up to 71 years. However, the US FDA has clarified that an indictment contains only allegations and that all accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
