CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. Two separate mock Parliament programmes are being organised in the national capital Delhi on Friday, October 30, on the lines of parliamentary proceedings. Both events will discuss issues including democracy, the electoral process, constitutional institutions and political accountability. One programme will be held by the opposition INDIA alliance at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, while the other will take place at the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Convention Centre under the banner of Citizens for Democracy.
The programme at the NDMC Convention Centre will begin at 10:30 a.m. and has been themed “Democracy versus Anarchy”. Lawyers, students, chartered accountants, young activists and citizens associated with various fields will participate. A Parliament-like arrangement has been prepared for the event, where participants will play different political roles and hold discussions and debates in line with parliamentary procedure. Issues including EVMs, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the role of the Election Commission and accountability of democratic institutions will be taken up.
The INDIA alliance programme, meanwhile, will be held at the official residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will preside over it. Leaders of opposition parties will discuss Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and issues linked to the electoral process. The opposition has raised questions over the functioning of the Election Commission and the revision of electoral rolls. However, these are opposition allegations, and the Election Commission’s position may be different.
The two programmes are taking place at a time when political debate continues over electoral transparency and the role of constitutional institutions. Through the events, various perspectives related to parliamentary discussion, citizen participation and democratic accountability are expected to come forward.
