CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Security agencies have been put on alert after two suspects entered Britain’s RAF Molesworth military base, a site used by US forces and for NATO intelligence activities. British counter-terrorism police have launched an investigation after the incident. Both suspects are Latvian nationals living in Britain. Their ages have been given as 32 and 36.

According to police, the investigation began after military police on patrol found an abandoned vehicle near the base on the night of October 7. A search of the surrounding area followed, during which a breach was discovered in the outer fence of the military compound. At around 2 am on October 8, the two suspects were found inside the premises and arrested.

The two were initially arrested on suspicion of unauthorised entry to a prohibited place and causing damage to property. They were later re-arrested under the National Security Act 2023 on suspicion of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the interests of the United Kingdom. Police also searched two locations in the nearby Peterborough area. On October 9, both were released on bail with strict conditions, but the investigation is continuing.

Police have not yet made public the actual motive for the two entering the base. Investigators are trying to determine whether the incident was linked to any criminal activity or a threat to Britain’s national security. So far, no evidence has emerged to prove that the two were working for any foreign intelligence agency.

The incident has come to light after a separate investigation concerning another British military base, RAF Fairford. US bomber aircraft have been stationed at Fairford, where an investigation is under way into an alleged plot for a possible attack. However, British police have made it clear that, at present, there are no indications that the Molesworth incident is connected to the Fairford case.
