CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Hemorrhoids, or piles, are a condition involving swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum. They are mainly seen as internal, external, prolapsed and thrombosed hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids occur inside the rectum and may often cause painless, bright red bleeding. External hemorrhoids occur under the skin around the anus and may cause pain, itching or swelling.
Internal hemorrhoids are further divided from Grade 1 to Grade 4. Grade 1 remains inside, Grade 2 comes out during bowel movement and goes back in on its own, Grade 3 may need to be pushed back in manually, while Grade 4 remains outside and does not go back in.
In thrombosed hemorrhoids, a blood clot forms inside an external hemorrhoid. This can cause sudden severe pain, swelling and a blue or purple lump. It can be extremely painful, but is generally not life-threatening.
It should be noted that no common type of hemorrhoid is generally considered “life-threatening” in itself. The risk may increase with heavy bleeding, which can cause dizziness, weakness or, in rare cases, anemia. Immediate medical help should be sought in cases of excessive or continuous bleeding, dizziness or fainting. Also, it is not correct to assume that every case of rectal bleeding is due to hemorrhoids, as there may be other serious causes behind it.
