CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid the continuing war between Russia and Ukraine, Ukraine has claimed to have inflicted major military losses on Russia. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian forces attacked the Borisoglebsk military airfield in Russia’s Voronezh region during the night and destroyed four Su-34 fighter-bomber aircraft. Two other aircraft were also damaged. The strike is being seen as significant in terms of affecting Russia’s aerial military capability.
Zelenskyy said on 15 October that Ukraine’s long-range Neptune missile was used in the operation. According to Ukrainian naval and military officials, a total of six Su-34 aircraft were damaged in the attack. The Ukrainian side says Russia used these aircraft to carry out airstrikes on Ukrainian targets.
The Su-34 is one of Russia’s key fighter-bomber aircraft. It is used to bomb military installations and other targets on the ground. These aircraft play an important role in Russia’s military strategy. Destroying or damaging such aircraft can affect their availability and the ability to conduct operations.
Satellite images that emerged after the attack showed signs of damage in the area of the airfield where aircraft were parked. Independent news reports, based on these images, indicated confirmation of the impact of the strike. However, the full extent of the damage to the aircraft and the possibility of their repair or reuse will need to be assessed separately.
Ukraine has been steadily pursuing a strategy of targeting Russia’s military sites and facilities that support the war. Through the use of long-range missiles, Ukraine is demonstrating its ability to strike military targets inside Russia as well. On the other hand, Russia has continued attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure. For now, the claim that four aircraft were completely destroyed and two others were damaged has been made by the Ukrainian president. The actual impact of this development on Russia’s military aviation capability can be assessed on the basis of further information.
