CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: UN Event Discusses Regional Terrorism, Questions Raised Over Pakistan’s Role
Geneva. Regional terrorism and Pakistan’s role were discussed at an event on terrorism and human rights held at the United Nations Office in Geneva. Organised by Interfaith International, the event featured views on alleged militant groups operating from Pakistan, the rights of religious minorities and Pakistan’s relations with the European Union.
At the event, journalist and EU Today editor Gary Cartwright expressed concern over terrorist networks’ recruitment, fundraising and cross-border activities. Referring to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, he cited the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks as an example of the international impact of regional terrorism. These comments were views presented by the panel speakers.
Greek MP Georgios Manous also spoke about religious freedom and the situation of minorities in Pakistan. He said Pakistan should not be seen only as a country affected by terrorism, but also as a country from which some extremist organisations have allegedly continued to operate.
The issue of Pakistan-backed terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir was also raised at the event. In a statement, Professor K. Warikoo called for action against terror financing and curbs on financial networks linked to terrorist organisations. Questions were also raised over the benefits Pakistan receives from European Union trade facilities and its compliance with counter-terrorism commitments.
