CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : Blue Baby Syndrome is a rare but serious medical condition in infants that requires immediate attention. As explained by pediatricians, this condition occurs when a baby’s blood doesn’t carry enough oxygen, causing a bluish tint to the skin, lips, and nails — particularly around the mouth and extremities. The condition can stem from congenital heart defects or environmental factors like nitrate contamination in drinking water.

The primary causes include Tetralogy of Fallot (a combination of four heart defects present at birth), transposition of the great arteries, and other structural heart abnormalities. In some cases, exposure to high levels of nitrates — often from well water — can interfere with the oxygen-carrying capacity of a baby’s blood, leading to methemoglobinemia, a form of Blue Baby Syndrome.

Symptoms typically include difficulty breathing, poor feeding, rapid heartbeat, lethargy, and visible blue discoloration. Treatment varies based on the cause but may include oxygen therapy, medication, and in many cases, surgery.

Early diagnosis is critical. Pediatricians urge parents to seek immediate medical help if symptoms appear. With timely intervention, most babies can recover and go on to live healthy lives.
