CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Unseasonal rain has changed the weather pattern in Delhi-NCR. Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning from Sunday night to Monday morning led to a fall in temperature. Along with Delhi, several areas of Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad saw waterlogging on roads, affecting traffic. According to the India Meteorological Department, around 40 millimetres of rain was recorded at the Safdarjung Observatory by 5:30 a.m. on Monday. The rain brought relief from the heat, though strong winds and waterlogging also increased difficulties for residents.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast the possibility of heavy rain on October 12 in parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand. It also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in Delhi-NCR and nearby areas between October 12 and 15. Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kilometres per hour at some places, while strong gusts are likely to touch 60 kilometres per hour.
The main reason for the sudden change in weather is a western disturbance and associated atmospheric activity. Even after the withdrawal of the monsoon, such weather systems can bring rain to northern India. According to the weather department’s forecast, the sky in Delhi may remain partly cloudy on October 13 and 14. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 32 to 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may remain around 23 to 25 degrees Celsius.
The weather department has advised people to avoid standing in open fields and under trees during lightning and to check weather and traffic conditions before travelling. Farmers have also been asked to remain alert to prevent possible damage to crops due to strong winds and rain.
