CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies: Ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the controversy over the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new rules is becoming a political challenge for the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party faces the task of addressing the anger of its traditional upper-caste voter base while retaining the support it has built among backward, Dalit and other social groups. In view of the situation, the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh have prepared for dialogue and outreach at the organisational level.

General category students and some organisations had objected to the UGC’s equity rules. They allege that the new provisions could be misused. Protests and dissatisfaction over the issue were also seen in Uttar Pradesh. Politically, this could affect the BJP’s social base, in which upper-caste voters have played an important role.

To address the resentment, the BJP has framed a strategy focused on student dialogue and social meetings. Various party cells will reach out to teachers, doctors, advocates, traders, youth and other social groups for dialogue. Workers have also been tasked with responding with facts to opposition allegations on issues such as the UGC, the Constitution and voter list revision (SIR).

BJP and RSS workers will hold meetings with youth associated with educational institutions and try to clear their doubts. The cells have been instructed to prepare a one-month action plan for this. On the other hand, to challenge the Samajwadi Party’s PDA (Backward, Dalit and Minority) formula, the BJP is preparing to increase dialogue on cultural and religious issues along with social equations. It remains to be seen how effective this strategy proves in addressing upper-caste anger and maintaining the party’s broader social support.
