He operated Panambi Resort and Spa in the Ganga Bhogpur Talla area of Rishikesh. After he went missing on 27 October, police and SDRF teams had been continuously carrying out a search operation in the river. On Tuesday, his body was found about one kilometre ahead of the resort.
According to information, before going missing, Neeraj Gupta had handed over a five- to six-page letter to an employee of the resort. Police said that on one page of the letter he had mentioned taking his own life, while other matters were written on the remaining pages. After this, he suddenly went missing. During the search, his watch and slippers were also recovered on the banks of the Ganga.
In the case, his wife Vineeta Gupta lodged a complaint at Lakshman Jhula police station. She accused two acquaintances of her husband, Ravi Bajaj and Gagan Batra, of mentally harassing him over land sale-purchase and financial transactions. According to his wife, in 2019 Neeraj had taken the resort on lease along with the two men. In addition, about six bighas of land near the resort had also been purchased, over which a dispute was continuing.
On the basis of the wife’s complaint, police have registered a case against both accused for abetment of suicide. The SDRF recovered the body and handed it over to police. Police have sent the body for post-mortem, and all evidence related to the case, including the suicide note, is being examined. Police say the allegations can be confirmed only after the investigation.
