CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Gorakhpur. A stir broke out in Gorakhpur during the counting of votes for the Legislative Council (MLC) election in Uttar Pradesh when the seal of a ballot box from the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Division Teachers’ Constituency was found broken. The box is said to be linked to the Bankata area of Deoria district.
After the matter came to light, independent candidate Ajay Singh lodged an objection and filed a complaint with the Election Commission. The district administration has kept the concerned box separately. The decision of the relevant election officials will now be important for the next steps in the matter.
According to an Aaj Tak report, the seal of a ballot box taken out of the strong room during counting was found broken. After this information emerged, there was increased commotion among those present at the counting centre. Independent candidate Ajay Singh objected to it and informed the Election Commission about the matter.
According to Ajay Singh, the concerned ballot box has been kept separate from the other boxes. He also expressed the possibility that the seal may have broken due to human error. However, the official reason for the circumstances in which the seal broke has not yet been clarified.
The administration handled the situation at the spot and kept the concerned ballot box aside. It now has to be decided what procedure will be followed under election rules when a seal is found broken. The final decision in this matter has to be taken by the concerned election officials.
In the election process, the security of a ballot box seal and the record of its condition are important. In such a situation, an inquiry into the incident of the broken seal and verification of related documents are important for maintaining transparency.
Questions had been raised earlier as well over the election process for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ Constituency. Before counting, there had been an administrative change. Following a complaint, the Election Commission removed IAS officer Abhay Singh from the post of election observer and assigned the responsibility to Prakash Bindu.
For now, an inquiry and an official decision are awaited in the matter of the broken ballot box seal. The situation regarding the reason for the incident and its possible impact on counting will become clear only after the condition of the seal, the related records and the officials’ inquiry are examined.
