CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) completed 100 years since its establishment on October 1, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the centenary celebrations held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on the occasion.
He said that despite changes in governments, technology and examination systems, public trust in the UPSC has remained intact. The Prime Minister said the UPSC and state public service commissions will have an important role in advancing the kind of governance required for a developed India.
The UPSC’s institutional journey began on October 1, 1926, when the first Public Service Commission was set up in India. Its first chairman was Sir Ross Barker, an officer of the British Home Civil Service. Initially, it functioned as an advisory body. In 1937, it was renamed the Federal Public Service Commission, and after the Constitution came into force in 1950, it became the Union Public Service Commission.
Today, the UPSC is among the country’s leading recruitment institutions. The commission conducts about 250 different recruitment processes every year, including examinations in several fields such as engineering, medicine, science, economics and defence. Its examination calendar is prepared nearly 18 months in advance.
At the centenary function, the Prime Minister stressed the need to preserve the commission’s independence, impartiality, merit-based selection, confidentiality and transparent processes. He also underlined the need for institutional reforms and the adoption of changing technology in line with future requirements.
