CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: U.S. pressure has increased on countries buying crude oil and gas from Russia. The U.S. House of Representatives has approved the “Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act 2026” by 262-159 votes. The bill gives President Donald Trump the authority to impose additional tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that continue to buy energy from Russia.
Major buyers of Russian energy, such as India and China, could come within the scope of this law. However, passage of the bill does not mean that a 100 percent tariff has been immediately imposed on India. For that to happen, President Trump would first have to decide to use this authority. The bill has now been sent to Trump for his signature.
The legislation also provides for strengthening sanctions on Russia’s energy sector, officials and the alleged “shadow fleet.” Its stated objective is to affect Russia’s energy income and increase economic pressure on Moscow amid the Ukraine war.
This development is important for India because the country buys large quantities of crude oil from Russia. If the U.S. imposes additional tariffs in the future, it could affect India-U.S. trade and Indian exports. For now, the final decision on imposing tariffs rests with the U.S. President.
