CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: Military tensions between the United States and Iran have risen again just ahead of voting in the midterm elections in the United States. The US military carried out limited airstrikes on Monday on Iran’s Qeshm Island. The island is located near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. US officials described the action as a defensive step and said its purpose was to protect US military assets from Iranian attacks.
According to Iran’s state news agency, five explosions were heard on Qeshm Island. Reports of explosions also emerged from the nearby Bandar Lengeh area. However, initial reports did not officially confirm the damage caused by the strikes or any casualties.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that its air defence and electronic warfare systems shot down three US drones around the Strait of Hormuz. These included a claim that two MQM-170 reconnaissance drones were downed south of Qeshm Island. It also said an MQ-9 drone was targeted. These claims have not been independently confirmed by the US side.
The strikes took place at a time when US President Donald Trump had indicated the possibility of an agreement with Iran. US officials clarified that the action on Qeshm does not signal the resumption of a large-scale military campaign.
