CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The United States is facing criticism for reportedly ignoring an offer from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky months before the Iran conflict intensified, when Kyiv proposed sharing its expertise in countering Iranian-made Shahed drones. According to reports, Ukrainian officials presented the proposal during a closed-door meeting at the White House in August 2025, offering battle-tested anti-drone technologies developed during Ukraine’s war with Russia.
Ukraine has extensive experience dealing with Shahed drones, which Russia has widely deployed in the war against Kyiv. Ukrainian engineers developed low-cost interceptor drones, sensors, and electronic warfare systems to detect and destroy these inexpensive attack drones. During the meeting, Ukrainian officials even presented a detailed plan showing how the technology could protect U.S. forces and allied bases in the Middle East from potential Iranian drone threats.
However, the proposal was reportedly dismissed at the time. After the outbreak of the Iran conflict and the growing number of drone attacks targeting U.S. and allied positions, some American officials now acknowledge that overlooking Ukraine’s offer may have been a major tactical miscalculation.
Iran’s Shahed drones are relatively cheap — often costing tens of thousands of dollars — while the missiles used to intercept them can cost millions, creating a costly imbalance in modern warfare. As drone attacks intensify, the U.S. has reportedly turned back to Ukraine for assistance and expertise in counter-drone defense strategies.
