CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Representatives of the United States and Iran held talks for nearly three hours in New York during the United Nations General Assembly. US President Donald Trump described the talks as positive. The meeting is being seen as an important diplomatic contact amid the ongoing military conflict between Iran and the United States.
Special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner took part in the talks from the US side. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi participated on behalf of Iran. The talks were held through Qatari mediation, and mediators remained in constant contact with both sides.
The Strait of Hormuz was a key issue in the discussions. Iran has indicated that if US military pressure is reduced and the blockade on Iranian ports is lifted, it could reopen Hormuz within about seven days. The Iranian side also put forward conditions including the release of frozen Iranian funds and an end to the war.
However, no agreement has been announced after the talks. US officials have indicated that discussions will continue. Meanwhile, differences remain between Iran and the United States on several issues, including the nuclear programme, military pressure and sanctions.
