CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: US Revokes Nearly $12 Billion Health Grant Allocated During Pandemic
The Trump administration has revoked nearly $12 billion in health grants that were allocated to US states for healthcare services. These federal funds were being used for infectious disease management, mental health services, addiction treatment, and other essential services. The administration had distributed this money to US states during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reports from The New York Times and CNN have discussed the matter in detail. Several federal departments and state officials confirmed this move by the Trump administration on Wednesday. The US Department of Health and Human Services stated that the COVID pandemic is now over, and taxpayers’ money will no longer be wasted. The administration expects to recover the funds within about 30 days.
Lori Tremmel Freeman, CEO of the National Association of County and City Health Officials, said that local health departments and organizations were notified this week about the termination of funding. The Minnesota Department of Health stated that the state had received a $226 million grant.
Brian Castrucci, President and CEO of the non-profit de Beaumont Foundation, strongly criticized the decision, calling it a devastating blow to public health. Dr. Philip Huang, Director of Health and Human Services in Dallas, Texas, said the decision would affect epidemiology, contact tracing, and lab testing. It would also impact initiatives such as diabetes education programs at local community centers.
