CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Is using eye drops yourself for burning, itchy eyes safe? AIIMS doctor explains the right approach

New Delhi. Many people buy eye drops from a medical store and start using them without consulting a doctor when they experience burning, stinging, itching or dryness in the eyes. According to experts, not every type of eye drop is safe for the eyes, and the wrong medicine can worsen the problem.

According to Padma Shri Dr. Jeewan Singh Titiyal, former chief of the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, New Delhi, one cause of burning and dryness in the eyes can be dry eye. The problem can also occur due to looking at a mobile phone or computer for long periods, direct air from a fan or air-conditioner, and increasing age. In such situations, suitable eye drops may provide relief, but it is important to choose the medicine carefully.

The doctor specifically advised caution regarding steroid-based eye drops. Before buying any eye drop, people should read information about its ingredients. If needed, they should ask a doctor or pharmacist whether it contains steroids. Such drops should not be used without medical advice. If redness in the eyes increases after using eye drops, burning or pain becomes worse, or vision starts becoming blurred, people should contact an ophthalmologist instead of repeatedly using drops on their own. To give the eyes rest, avoiding continuous screen viewing for long periods and following the 20-20-20 rule may also help.
