CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal/ Uttar Pradesh : Despite a nationwide dip in sugar production, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a top performer, showcasing superior output and resilience in the face of agricultural and climatic challenges. According to data released by the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), while other major sugar-producing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka witnessed a sharp decline in production, Uttar Pradesh maintained stability and recorded a relatively high output during the 2024–25 crushing season.
The state achieved this by adopting advanced cane varieties such as Co-0238, implementing better irrigation techniques, and ensuring timely harvesting. Additionally, policy support from the state government and improved efficiency in sugar mills played a key role in boosting performance. Over 119 operational sugar mills across UP crushed around 96.4 million tonnes of cane, resulting in a sugar output of over 10 million tonnes.
Experts credit the consistent coordination between farmers, millers, and the government for this achievement. The state’s success story stands in contrast to the challenges faced in western and southern India, where erratic weather patterns and lower cane yields have negatively impacted production.
Uttar Pradesh’s performance is seen as a model for sustainable and efficient sugar production, especially during times of agricultural stress.
