Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has declared a public holiday on Monday, October 19, 2026, for Mahanavami. Earlier, a holiday had already been scheduled on October 20 for Dussehra and Vijayadashami. With the weekly Sunday holiday, many people are expected to benefit from consecutive holidays.
Under the state government’s decision, government offices will remain closed on October 19 for Mahanavami. The decision was taken after demands from employees and teachers. The government has declared the holiday with the aim of giving people an opportunity to take part in religious and cultural activities with their families during the festival. Following the decision, government employees will get two consecutive public holidays on October 19 and 20. As Sunday, October 18, is a weekly holiday, many employees may get a three-day long weekend.
The general holiday schedule for schools and colleges is as follows: October 18, Sunday: weekly holiday. October 19, Monday: public holiday declared for Mahanavami. October 20, Tuesday: holiday for Dussehra and Vijayadashami. In this way, many schools and colleges are likely to remain closed for three consecutive days. However, the calendar of some educational institutions may differ. Some schools may have a longer autumn break or Dussehra holiday period, so students and parents should also check the notices issued by their institutions.
Government employees will also benefit from the Mahanavami public holiday. Employees of government offices and institutions covered by the order will get the holiday benefit. The departments and institutions concerned will have to make arrangements according to the revised holiday order. Departmental instructions may be different for employees posted in essential services and on special duty.
The consecutive holidays will make it easier for people to plan festival shopping, travel and time with family.
