CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Lucknow. Three new greenfield expressways will be developed in Uttar Pradesh to strengthen the road network and speed up passenger and freight transport. The state government has planned to purchase about 8,200 hectares of land for these projects.

The proposed expressways will pass through nearly 650 villages in Uttar Pradesh and Haridwar district in neighbouring Uttarakhand. The land purchase process is estimated to cost the government exchequer more than Rs 15,000 crore.

The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is the nodal agency for these projects. The three proposed expressways include the 320-km Vindhya Expressway, the 145-km Meerut-Haridwar Expressway and the 100-km Vindhya-Purvanchal Link Expressway.

The Vindhya Expressway will extend the Ganga Expressway to Sonbhadra via Prayagraj, Bhadohi and Mirzapur. For its construction, around 4,615 hectares of land is planned to be purchased in 109 villages of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The route is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and facilitate freight movement.

The Meerut-Haridwar Expressway will connect the western part of the Ganga Expressway with Haridwar. For this, around 2,020 hectares of land will be required in Amroha and Bijnor districts of Uttar Pradesh and in the Haridwar region of Uttarakhand. This could improve road connectivity between western Uttar Pradesh and Haridwar.

The third proposed project is the Vindhya-Purvanchal Link Expressway, which will connect the Chandauli, Ghazipur and Mirzapur regions. About 1,560 hectares of land is planned to be purchased for this project. It is expected to ease travel between the Purvanchal and Vindhya regions.

The government expects improved road connectivity to boost industrial activity, trade, logistics and local employment. However, the construction timeline and progress of other stages of the projects will depend on the relevant approvals and the land purchase process.
