Uttarakhand raises MBBS interns’ monthly stipend to Rs 25,000

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Uttarakhand government has approved a major increase in the stipend of MBBS interns working in government medical colleges. At a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, it was decided to raise the interns’ monthly stipend from Rs 17,000 to Rs 25,000. This means MBBS interns will now receive Rs 8,000 more every month.

The decision will apply to five government medical colleges in the state. These include medical colleges located in Srinagar, Haldwani, Dehradun, Haridwar and Almora. Along with MBBS, postgraduate medical courses are also conducted in these institutions.

The stipend increase comes at a time when around 600 MBBS interns in Uttarakhand had been protesting to demand a raise. The interns had been seeking an increase from Rs 17,000 to Rs 30,000 per month. During the agitation, regular health services at government hospitals were also affected, although emergency services were kept running.

The government’s new decision is expected to provide financial relief to medical interns. It remains to be seen from which date the increased stipend will take effect and what stand the protesting doctors take on the decision.
