CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Dehradun: A fresh controversy has emerged in Uttarakhand over the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, of the electoral roll. According to the Election Department, around 1.73 lakh Form-7 applications were received during the revision. Of these, more than 95,000 voters have been marked in the ineligible category. However, this does not mean that these names have already been removed from the final electoral roll. The final list will be released on October 3.
According to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, voters marked ineligible either could not provide the documents sought during verification or did not appear for the hearing in person or through a family member. After this, the respective Electoral Registration Officer or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer recorded them as ineligible in the Election Commission’s online system, and Form-7 was generated through the system. The Congress has raised questions over this process. Party leaders have sought clarification over the large number of Form-7 applications generated and over applications being recorded in the names of officials in some cases. The Congress has also questioned whether some forms were generated automatically through the Election Commission’s system. These allegations have been made by the Congress, and the election office has clarified its procedural position on them.
The Election Department says the SIR process is being carried out according to the rules and that information is being shared with political parties. The department has also clarified that the option for people marked ineligible to get their names included in the electoral roll has not been closed. After the final list is released, eligible persons will be able to file Form-6 with the necessary documents to claim inclusion of their names.
