CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Indian T20 team captain Shreyas Iyer has made the team’s strategy clear regarding young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He said it will not be easy for 15-year-old Vaibhav to get a direct place in the playing XI for now, as openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have been performing consistently well. Iyer’s statement ahead of the five-match T20 International series against New Zealand has intensified discussion over the young player’s chances of playing.

“Two excellent openers are already in the team”

Shreyas Iyer said the Indian team already has two excellent openers in Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Both have performed well in recent matches and also played an important role in winning the T20 World Cup. In such a situation, it is important to consider the performances of the current players before making changes to the team combination. According to Iyer, Vaibhav needs to remain patient for now and focus on his preparation. He assured the young batter that with consistent hard work and the right process, opportunities may come his way in the future.

Keeping Vaibhav comfortable in the dressing room is also important

Iyer said it is important to keep a talented player like Vaibhav comfortable and positive in the team environment. Given his age, he has enough time to progress in international cricket. The team management’s objective is also to prepare him for the right opportunity rather than rushing him into the side.

Has already shown his ability at the Asian Games

Vaibhav Suryavanshi opened the batting for the Indian team during the Asian Games. He scored a total of 53 runs in two matches and batted at a strike rate of around 176.66. However, he did not get a place in the playing XI in the recent T20 series against the West Indies. Vaibhav was also selected in the Indian squad for the England and Ireland tours this year, but so far he has played in only eight of India’s 21 T20 International matches.

Chance to gain experience on the New Zealand tour

Iyer indicated that being with the team in New Zealand conditions would help Vaibhav understand overseas pitches and local conditions. This experience could be useful for his future international career. For now, the team management appears to be in favour of retaining the Abhishek-Sanju opening pair. For Vaibhav, this is a phase of patience, continuous practice and waiting for the right opportunity. It remains to be seen whether he gets a place in the playing XI in the T20 series against New Zealand or has to wait a little longer.
