CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A major tragedy occurred in Bihar’s Vaishali district when a boat capsized in the Ganga river. Thirteen children died in the accident near Rampur Shyamchand village in the Raghopur Diara area on the night of Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
The people on board were crossing the Ganga to attend a feast in another village. After the accident, local residents and rescue teams launched relief operations. According to initial reports, around 20 to 30 people were on the boat. Officials said several people were rescued, while reports also emerged that some passengers were missing.
The reported deaths of seven children from the same family left the entire area in mourning. Most of the deceased were minors. Grief spread through the families, with relatives inconsolable after the tragedy.
After receiving information about the accident, teams from the administration, police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) reached the spot. Local divers also carried out a search operation in the river.
According to preliminary information, the boat lost balance midstream and overturned. Some local residents suspected that the boat may have been carrying more passengers than its capacity. However, the exact cause of the accident will be officially confirmed only after an investigation.
Amid the tragedy, the bravery of 17-year-old Chandni also came to light. According to media reports, she helped save three people who were drowning in the river. However, Chandni lost her sister in the accident. Her courage during the crisis played an important role in saving several lives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also expressed sorrow over the incident and announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the family of each deceased person.
The administration has been instructed to speed up rescue work and ensure proper treatment for the injured.
The accident has once again highlighted the need for safety measures during river crossings and monitoring of passenger numbers on boats. The local administration is gathering information on the causes of the accident and on those reported missing.
