CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A fresh political debate has erupted over the singing of “Vande Mataram” after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah were seen standing during the rendition of the song. The BJP praised the two leaders for showing respect to the national song, while Congress leader Pawan Khera said the party follows the established tradition regarding the portions of “Vande Mataram” performed at official programmes.
According to the report, Khera said Congress-ruled states continue to follow the convention of singing the two portions associated with the freedom movement. He expressed hope that alliance partners would also follow the same tradition.
The BJP, meanwhile, highlighted Omar and Farooq Abdullah’s decision to remain standing throughout the song and described it as a gesture of respect. BJP leaders also criticised Congress for its position and argued that “Vande Mataram” should be accorded due honour.
The controversy has also exposed differences between Congress and its alliance partner, the National Conference, over the appropriate rendition of the national song. The issue has acquired a wider political dimension in Jammu and Kashmir, with both parties facing questions over their respective positions on national symbols and established practices.
