CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has formally joined the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant development in the State’s political landscape. TVK leaders Aadhav Arjuna and Marie Wilson represented the party at a meeting of Tamil Nadu constituents of the INDIA bloc held at the Congress headquarters, Sathyamurthy Bhavan, in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B. Manickam Tagore described TVK’s participation as a “historic day” and said the alliance had been strengthened by the party’s entry.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Congress, TVK, CPI(M), CPI, VCK, MDMK and IUML. The participating parties discussed their campaign against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The alliance has planned demonstrations at district headquarters across Tamil Nadu on October 13 and 14, followed by a major joint protest in Chennai on October 15.
TVK’s participation comes amid changing political equations in Tamil Nadu. The DMK was absent from the meeting, while Congress and TVK have continued to work together at the State level. The latest development places TVK alongside several opposition parties on the issue of electoral-roll revision. Tagore said the INDIA bloc would remain open to parties opposing the BJP-led government at the Centre.
